Resumen:

Ph.D. or M.S. Position in Dairy Health
The department of Animal Science at The University of Tennessee currently has two graduate assistantship positions available for qualified individuals seeking graduate training leading to a M.S. or Ph.D. degree (assistantships that cover annual stipend, cost associated with required coursework, and medical insurance are dependent on GPA and approval from the Animal Science Graduate Committee). These positions will be in the area of dairy health and pre-harvest dairy food safety with emphasis on control and prevention of infectious diseases of dairy animals. Primary areas of focus include, but are not limited to, development of protective vaccines against bacterial mastitis pathogens (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Streptococcus uberis) of dairy animals, milk quality and pre-harvest dairy food safety improvement, understanding mechanisms associated with the development of antibiotic resistance as related to their prophylactic use in dairy farms, monitoring incidence and prevalence rates of foodborne and zoonotic pathogens in raw milk, milk products and dairy animals, identification and characterization of novel host-bacterial factors expressed during early stages of host-bacterial interactions using genome, transcriptome, proteome, and metabolome based in vitro and in vivo approaches. The appointees will be involved in generating ideas leading to research projects, experimental design, grant proposal writing, project coordination, daily project operation, execution of planned experiments within an approved time line, effectively recording daily experiments and present progress achieved in each experiment during lab meetings and/or to lab manager/ principal investigator (PI). Prospective students are also expected to present posters and/or oral presentations at regional, national and international scientific meetings, and submit manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner. Prospective students must be willing to work effectively in a collaborative team environment and be willing to learn applied and basic research techniques. Demonstrated expertise or experience in dairy health and production activities including clinical and molecular microbiology, molecular and cellular immunology (vaccinology), biochemistry, cell culture techniques, basic statistics, bioinformatics, data interpretation, and written and oral communication skills is a plus but not mandatory.

To be considered for admission the applicant(s) must hold a B.S. or M.S. in one of the following areas: animal or dairy science, veterinary medicine, veterinary microbiology, biomedical science, biochemistry and molecular biology.
